Writers Festival Poetry
& Short Story Contest

The Invitation
Submit your finest work to the Vancouver International Writers Festival Poetry & Short Story Contest.

The Rewards
Prizes will be awarded to the top two entries in poetry and in creative fiction. The winning entries will published in the Spring 2006 issue of subTERRAIN and on the Festival website.

The Criteria
Entries will be judged on the following criteria:

  • Originality
  • Emotion
  • Focus and clarity
  • Organized, fluid writing style
  • Authenticity
  • Strength and distinction of voice
  • Imagination

1st prize in each category: $350
2nd prize in each category: $250

The Rules

  1. The contest is open to all writers.
  2. Entries will be accepted for previously unpublished work in each category:
    • Poetry (any style): 500 word limit
    • Creative Short Fiction: 1,500 word limit
  3. Entries will be judged blind. Please do not put your name on your story or poem. On a separate sheet, include your name, address and phone number and the word count of your piece. For each story or poem, please include a $10 entry fee. Make cheques payable to the Vancouver International Writers Festival.
  4. Drop off or mail your submissions to the Vancouver International Writers & Readers Festival, 202–1398 Cartwright St., Vancouver, BC V6H 3R8
  5. Your entry should be typed, double-spaced, on 8 ½ × 11-inch paper.
  6. Please do not send originals; entries will not be returned.
  7. Winners will be selected by a panel of professionals in the publishing and book industry.
  8. Entries must be postmarked or delivered on or before October 23, 2005.
  9. Winners will be announced by January 2006.
