Grade: Suitable for grades 8 to 12
Three BC writers—sometimes musicians, sometimes poets, sometimes welders, sometimes McJobbers, always entertaining—get together this morning to take the art of writing to new places. Spoken word iconoclast and musician C.R. Avery joins Vancouver favourite Billeh Nickerson onstage with audio poet and arts activist Hilary Peach. “Lyrics look like #@*% on paper,” says Avery. This spoken word, poetry and storytelling on the fly, music fusion not only pushes out the usual definition of “what is poetry” but encompasses all manner of word-based art. Spread the word!
(This event is repeated on Thursday afternoon.)
Curriculum Connection
- Explore poetry as another medium of written and spoken expression.
- Examine poetry as another medium to express commentary on the social issues of the times.
ACTIVITIES
- Pass out a section of the current day’s newspaper to each of your students. Give your students about 20-25 minutes to skim through the pages and highlight any phrases that catch their eye. They should have about 5-7 phrases each.
- Once they have their phrases, give students long sections of adding machine tape and a marker. Have them copy their phrases onto strips of adding machine tape.
- Next, put them into groups of 4 or 5. Together they lay their strips on the floor. As a group they work together to come up with a poem working only with the strips they have chosen. The strips cannot be altered in any way.
- When they are finished, they can tape or glue their poem onto a large piece of construction paper and present the poem.
- Hold a spoken word cabaret, challenging other classes to a slam, based on this lesson.
