Grade: Suitable for grades K to 3

Spend the afternoon with a silly chicken, llamas in the laundry, a cat named Zoom and three fabulous storytellers. Three authors who have written for the serious and the adult show that, at the base of all good stories, is a delight in the words themselves. Little ones will be tapping their toes to the rhythm and the rhyme as these stories and poems take eager listeners from Pakistan to the North Pole.

Curriculum Connection

  • Oral reading
  • Identifying word patterns
  • Comprehension of story themes
  • Working collaboratively to create rhyming poems

ACTIVITIES

  1. Read William New’s rhyming books, such as Vanilla Gorilla. Have students read verses out loud several times, emphasizing the rhyming word.
  2. Ask students what rhyming words are (words that have the same ending sounds). Tell students to touch their nose when they hear words that rhyme.
  3. Then read one of Khan’s or Wynne-Jones’ books.
  4. Using one of their books as a model, create a rhyming chart with your students based on the book. Help students, or break them into groups to pick out words or sentences from the books to build a rhyme book upon. List them on a chart.
  5. Help the class find rhyming words that can be put together into a phrase that rhymes.
  6. Create a class rhyme book. Ask students to contribute an illustration to the book – a drawing, photo, magazine clipping, etc.
