Scott Chantler is the Joe Shuster Award–winning cartoonist of the graphic novels Two Generals and Northwest Passage and of the Three Thieves graphic novel series. He is also a popular commercial illustrator whose clients have included McDonald's, Reebok, Macy's, Rogers, the New York Daily News, the National Post, the Toronto Star and Maclean's. Great Scotts! This morning, musician and author Rick Scott delights readers with his illustrations and songs of The Great Gazzoon, a world where young Gazoon Wazoo is doing everything he can to put off practising his tightrope walking, including playing the shnookimer. Author and illustrator Scott Chantler presents the comic book world he has created, filled with circus acrobats and jugglers, arrows and adventures. Even reluctant readers will be enthralled by the stories these two tell through songs and comic illustrations. This is sure to be an entertaining, energetic and vibrant morning with images and sounds that will fill up eyes and minds.

Activities:

Have students illustrate their favourite nursery rhyme/song using a comic with a maximum of five panels.
Ask students to sit with their eyes closed at their desks or on the floor as you play a selection of pieces of music from various genres. After each piece, ask students to describe what emotions the song made them feel, any colours they associated with the song, or scenes they could imagine happening.
Divide students into teams and have a competition where students must match different musical instruments to their names. Include some lesser known instruments, such as Rick Scott’s dulcimer.

Class Discussion:

How many people in the class read comics on a regular basis?
Which comic strips/series/etc. are their favourite?
Brainstorm the different kinds of comics—webcomics, newspaper comic strips, graphic novels/manga, traditional ‘superhero’ comic books.
