Scott Chantler, Ontario

Scott Chantler is the Joe Shuster Award–winning cartoonist of the graphic novels Two Generals and Northwest Passage and of the Three Thieves graphic novel series. He is also a popular commercial illustrator whose clients have included McDonald's, Reebok, Macy's, Rogers, the New York Daily News, the National Post, the Toronto Star and Maclean's. Kallie George is an author and editor living in Vancouver, BC. She completed her Masters of Children’s Literature at the University of British Columbia in 2007. As an editor for the award-winning children’s publishing house, Simply Read Books, she is involved in all aspects of book development and works on projects as multi-varied as board books, picture books, early readers, and young adult fantasy fiction. Nina Matsumoto, British Columbia

Nina Matsumoto (better known by her online alias, “space coyote”) is an Eisner Award-winning comic book artist. Critically acclaimed for her unique style and versatility, she has released two volumes of her original manga, Yokaiden. A lifelong fan of The Simpsons, she regularly pencils for Bongo Comics (Simpson Comics, Bart Simpson Comics). Read more

There are many ways to tell a story, and the graphic novel is one that is increasingly popular. The challenge of making words work with images is just one more element in the process of narrative: keeping plot well-paced, developing characters and the basics of storytelling. Writer Norah McClintock, who worked with an illustrator for her new graphic novel, joins two award-winning illustrator/writers, Scott Chantler and Nina Matsumoto, to talk about blending the worlds of word and image. With the subjects of their work ranging from fantasy to history to reality-based suspense, these creative minds have thought deeply about the best way to tell their stories.

Words and Images

Curriculum Connections:

Demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics of narratives (e.g., sequence, storytelling)
Explore connections between images and words
Use detailed vocabulary to write a story

Activities:

Find a picture that is telling a story with people and a clear situation.
Copy the picture for each student.
Ask students to examine the picture individually for a few minutes, jotting down on a piece of scratch paper or in their writer's notebooks any features or details that they notice.
Consulting their notes as necessary, students brainstorm about the possible events and characters this picture illustrates. As students share their ideas, place the words or phrases under headings such as Character, Setting, Situation, and Vocabulary.
Ask students to write from one character's point of view. They may write about the character's feelings and thoughts, tell the story that leads up to the picture, or narrate the events that follow. Encourage students not only to describe the picture but also to invent an original story related to the event illustrated.
