Moving Stories Films in BC Premiere
October 25 at the Vancouver International Writers Festival

Local filmmakers premiere newly commissioned short film adaptation of BC author David Chariandy’s Soucouyant

September 24, 2008 (Toronto, ON) - Moving Stories Films continues its cross-Canada tour at Vancouver International Writers Festival with a lineup including 15 diverse short films with one thing in common – they are all inspired by the written word. The first of its kind in Canada, the book-inspired film program is presented by on-stage hosts Paul Quarrington (Curator) and Judith Keenan (Founder), joined for the Vancouver event by special guest and BC resident author Ivan E. Coyote, whose short story No Bikini was adapted into a short film of the same name, included Moving Stories, directed by BC filmmaker Claudia Morgado Escanilla. The entire film program takes place Saturday, October 25 at 8:00pm at the Emily Carr University Theatre (1399 Johnston Street, Granville Island). Books which inspired the films in the film program will be available for sale at the theatre, with authors available for signing.

In addition to the main program, Moving Stories will premiere Vancouver filmmakers Ken Tsui and Brittany Junek’s short film adaptation of BC author David Chariandy’s novel Soucouyant, produced with the support of BookShorts Literacy Program and Emily Carr University of Art and Design specifically for the event at VIWF. Tsui and Junek are winners of the Moving Stories “Make A Film On Our Dime” screenplay competition. Shooting wrapped September 22; the filmmakers immediately began post production in preparation for its premiere October 25. Visit the Moving Stories Guest Blog at http://movingstoriesfilmfest.com to read Ken's filmmaking play-by-play.

Other authors attending VIWF and also represented in the Moving Stories film line up include: Andrew Davidson, on-screen in the adapation of his novel The Gargoyle; and of course Paul Quarrington who wrote and directed Pavane, the film adaptation of his 2008 Giller-nominated novel The Ravine.

Moving Stories Films is a 90-minute curated program of short films celebrating the written word submitted by artists around the world. The films have been selected by Festival Founder Judith Keenan and Programmer Paul Quarrington in consultation with illustrious Film Advisors Robert Lantos, Sarah Polley, Nino Ricci, Gary Thomas and Anne Collins. From September to November 2008, Moving Stories will screen at public events hosted by film and literature festivals across North America.
